August 2, 2018

Dear Brandywine Springs Families,

I have been working hard here at BSS over the last month to learn all I can about our awesome school.  Over the course of the past few weeks, I met with over 35 teachers and staff members who shared with me their passion of teaching at Brandywine Springs.  It is evident that this school year is going to be very special.

I am looking forward to meeting all of our students and families in the weeks ahead as we move closer to the start of the 2018-2019 school year.  I wanted to remind you of a few important dates in August that will allow you to visit with teachers and staff in preparation for the first day of school. Since beginning  my work in Red Clay, I have heard from numerous families and community members about safety around pick up and drop off at the school.  Safety to me is paramount in the learning environment.  The start and end of the day can be tricky if things are not addressed proactively.  The administrative team and I met with AJ Nowell our Public Safety Officer and brainstormed ways for our students to enter and exit school in the most safe and efficient way.

I have attached the new car rider and bus pickup and drop off maps to this communication.  The new plan addresses many factors when it comes to student safety and sheer efficiency.  The car line will now use the St. Barnabas entrance and be directed to follow the yellow arrows on the map when entering to drop off and pick up students.  The green arrows address how the cars will exit the area upon drop off or pick up.  Students will be dropped off to staff members and enter through the door at the back of the building.

All Buses will use the main entrance for drop off and pick up.  The buses will enter the circle and stop after going around the circle around the old merge area.  The buses then will use the same entrance to exit in the morning and afternoon.  By making this move we eliminate any chance for buses and cars to pass one another and we create a safety zone for students who may be crossing the street from the transportation lot as they exit the buses.  We recognize there may be times that parents need to assist a student in bringing in a project so during those times we ask that parents follow through the car line and proceed into the transportation lot to park and walk across the street in the safety zone and sign in at the main entrance in the front of the school.  All areas will be clearly marked with staff members will be on duty to assist in maintaining the flow of traffic.

When school begins our doors will open at 8:45 am.  In order for us to be prepared for student arrival we ask that you stick to that drop off time because our teachers are required to be ready for work at 8:45 am.  We believe with our later start time that it is important for us to get students in the building as early as we can for our morning routine to function safely and smoothly.
